Barrier to communication	Why is it a barrier?	How to overcome it?
Jargon	Jargon is the term for special expressions used by a particular group. It can be difficult to understand for people who aren’t “in” on the joke.	Use plain language, or visual communication (pictures/written instructions)
Emotional barriers	Emotional barriers are ways that human’s emotions can get in the way of having a constructive conversation. An example of this would be anger. A person could lash out due to having a bad day, or something else entirely.	Find out the situation and adjust accordingly. Or if the emotional barrier is too big to overcome, don’t push the situation.
Lack of interest	It could be a barrier due to people not being interested in what you have to say.	Find what your audience is interested in first, or if your audience loses interest halfway, take a different tact.
Differences in opinion	Differences in opinion can take many forms, but the most common kind are polarizing opinions. This is when two people have completely differing and opposite opinions.	Find a common ground between the two opinions or agree to disagree. People can coexist with two different opinions and not dislike each other.
Physical disabilities (deafness, blindness etc)	If a person is blind, and you give them things to read, they will not be able to read them. Same goes for deafness; if you’re talking to someone with deafness, they’ll either struggle to hear you, or not hear you at all.	Provide accessiblility options (braille, audio description, other languages)
Language differences	This can be especially annoying when it’s something important that you’re trying to get across. If there’s a language barrier, say, your audience is Italian, and you don’t speak the language, they won’t understand you.	You could hire a translator, or if you wanted to work overseas, you’d have to learn the language.
Expectations	Expectations could lead to a false idea of a person, and a false idea of what that person stands for.	Keep an open mind. Don’t assume things about a person, because you do not know everything.
Cultural differences	Societal norms can differ in every country, with some things being acceptable in some countries, but not in others (the OK sign for example)	If you’re in a workplace as the CEO or in a position of leadership, promote appreciation of cultural differences. Share aspects of each other’s culture if at all possible.
